splatoon is a primarily online third person shooter game based around squids and ink by nintendo. the original splatoon came out on may 28 2015 for the wii u. it was followed by several installations on the switch of splatoon 2 (july 21 2017), splatoon 2: octo expansion (june 13 2018) and splatoon 3 (september 9 2022.)

in the splatoon world, human civilisation is long gone, and from their crushed hopes and dreams, squids have evolved to become humanoid and have fun!

there are several types of gameplay: most famously, turf war is the battle mode where players fight and ink as much of a setting as possible. there are branched versions of turfwar such as tower control, rain maker, splat zones and clam blitz. more recent game modes include salmon run, where players team up to fight waves of salmonoids to get fish eggs for their boss, or tableturf which is the ingame card game battle system based of off turf wars. there are also story modes for each game/dlc.

characters face off against... well, that would be a spoiler, wouldn't it? in the first two games, an inkling tries to reclaim the great zapfish from octolings, an electric fish that powers the city. in octo expansion, an amnesiac octoling struggles to escape a grueling training ground and get to the promised land. in 3, the player battles mutated octolings and explores an underground world.
